Sapporo Snow Festival takes place in early February every year, and has had a long history that dates back to 1950! I have been to Hokkaido before for its lavender season, but have yet to have had the chance to witness one of these magnificent snow sculpture displays. Got to be amazed by the craftsmanship that has gone into such intricate snow sculptures. One of these days, I shall find my way to the Sapporo Snow Festival!

Hi Martin, yes believe it’s all snow. The next festival is scheduled to take place from 5th to 11th February in 2014.
Thanks. From the first of the New Year I’ll be creating an ice sculpture myself – The Ice Palace II, although I use an entirely different technique. I build my palace with a hose and utilize the forces of nature to do the sculpting – a sort of collaboration you could call it. Seeing those photos has triggered a wave of anticipation for the coming cold season and the fun and creative opportunity that accompany. Cheers!
