Last Minute Chinese New Year Cookies

Are you ready for Chinese New Year? I have to admit I’m not as prepared as I would like to be. Last year I was able to put together some homemade CNY cookies with hand drawn details on for my friends and family. However, I don’t think I will have enough time to make them again this year. Instead, I’m going to put together something really simple but thoughtful. Here’s a very simple way to wish your friends and family lucky when you go ‘bai nian’.

What You Need:

  • Three cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • red fondant
  • cookie cutter
  • crisco

What To Do:

CNY cookies

  1. Prepare your sugar cookie. I’ve used the no baking powder recipe here.
  2. Brush a layer of crisco onto the cookie cutter and the surface where you will roll your fondant out. Roll your red fondant out and use your cookie cutter to cut out the chinese character.
  3. Stick it onto your cookie.
